2.11 Customize Your Peakto Synchronization
Whether you are adding new pictures, or making changes in your catalogs through editing and organisation, you probably want Peakto to stay up to date and always reflect a correct image of your underlying sources.
Peakto has been designed to be always in sync, but it is important to understand how this works in order to make the most out of it.
Since version 2.0, Peakto has 2 operating modes, and they are completely different when it comes to syncing changes:
- interactive: when the Peakto main window is opened and the user interface is visible
- background: when the Peakto main window is closed and Peakto is running in the background as a menu bar app.
2.11.1 Background mode: the hassle free synchonization mode
In background mode, Peakto tries to maintain its catalog completely up to date. If will check for changes at intervals (configurable from the menu bar app) and will run Deep Synchronizations for you for sources that exhibits some changes and that are not currently opened in an editor. In other words, Peakto will detect changes and apply them, only if the sources are not currently being used by the user in order to avoid disruptions.
Caveats
Synchronisation happens at regular intervals...says every 1 hour. If you plug a drive that had many changes, these changes will not be detected until the end of the current period and will potentially be processed only in the next period. So you could have to wait up to 2hrs for these changes to be processed.
Tip!
When you are done with Peakto, close its window, rather than quit it. This way, Peakto will perform synchronisations at intervals, finish the long running tasks that have been interrupted, and ensure that everything is up to date when you need it next.
2.11.2 Interactive mode: the lightweight synchronization alert mode
In interactive mode, Peakto will only check for changes but will not run any Deep Synchronisation. It will mark those sources that have changes with a yellow icon and it is up to the user to decide to process those changes, either:
- by synchronizing one source at a time
- by synchronizing all sources
The checks occur at certain occasions: when the app is first launched, when the app becomes the active app.
You can deactivate those checks from the Preferences Menu.
Caveats
First of all, as mentioned above, there is no sync happening automatically in that mode. But you can decide when and what you want to synchronise.
If you deactivate sync via the preferences, Peakto will never check for changes and will never alert you that your sources are out of Sync. It is therefore important to either check for Sync manually or to put peakto in the background for the periodic syncs to be performed.
Tip!
When you do a lot of editing and go back and forth between Peakto and other apps, or when you have a large number of sources, you probably want to deactivate the option to check for changes when the app becomes active, as it will trigger intensive tasks too often. Either do a manual sync at the end of the day or to put Peakto in the background for the periodic syncs to be performed while you are away. The File menu has a handy action to check and sync all sources at once.
